AMES CITY LIFE

Ames offers students the chance to watch top ranked collegiate teams, an environment conducive to studying and small-town tranquility and security.

Residents of Ames have cheered the Cyclones from the beginning. Jack Trice Stadium and Hilton Coliseum have been home to many capacity-filled crowds roaring in anticipation of another Cyclone victory. Residents show their support in large numbers at every event. Fans flock to restaurants and televisions as well as making road trips to watch their Cyclones play away games.

With more than 26,000 students, Ames has the right mix of students and residents living together. The town has approximately 50,000 residents and both groups have worked together to make Ames an exceptional town.

The Ames city government, the student body government and the ISU administration joined together to form a public transportation system for the city. CyRide helped Ames earn "All American City" honors.

No matter what time of year, there is always something to do outdoors in Ames. During the winter months, skiing enthusiasts can enjoy cross-country and downhill skiing. In the summer, golfers can drive to any of several local public golf courses. There are many city leagues and tournaments in volleyball, sand volleyball, basketball and slow-pitch softball.

For the person who likes to bask in the sun, Big Creek State Park is about 15 minutes from Ames. Pontoons, inflatable rafts, skiers and boats fill up the area. Swimmers can also stay in town for sun and water. Ames has many public pools and parks for recreation.
